Group Leader Training Trajectory

For complete training in leadership of Interactive IFS Groups, there are the following components. This overview is meant to give you an idea of what you might need to become a good group leader and the order in which things can happen.

  1. Experience being a member of an Interactive Group

It is crucial that you have the experience of being a member so you know what it is like for your group members. This could be one of the Institute groups, our Level 1 Training, or another group that is similar.

  1. Learn about the Interactive Group Model and how to lead Interactive IFS Groups

This is covered in our Level 1 Training.

  1. Practice leading segments of a peer group with live supervision and feedback

This could be in our Level 1 Training and/or a Leader Practice Group.

  1. Start a practice group of your own

Leading segments of a peer group is helpful, but it doesn't provide enough practice. You'll need your own group, which could be a new group sourced from friends, colleagues, and/or clients, or it could be an existing group you lead that is converted (at least partly) into an Interactive Group. You could offer it as a low-fee or free group since you are just learning. You might want to co-lead with another trainee. This will give you practice leading every meeting of a group.

  1. Co-lead your Interactive Group with a trainer, including supervision

This is through the Apprenticeship program. It could be your group or an Institute group. These opportunities are limited by the number of trainers, which is currently just Jay. You can skip this step if you feel ready.

  1. Fully lead your Interactive Group under supervision

This could be your own group or an Apprenticeship Group that you are ready to lead on your own. This can lead to being certified by the Institute.

  1. Lead three or more of your groups, with occasional supervision

For full development as a group leader, you need lots of experience.

Certification

The Institute Certifies professionals as Interactive IFS Group Leaders.

To be Certified by the Institute, you must demonstrate your competence in leading groups. If you are an experienced group leader, you might be able to skip some of the above steps. In fact, none of the steps are required, unless you want to be certified by the Institute.

The Certification process is not just a checklist, but rather an educational journey where you learn a lot about yourself along the way.

Note:

Certification affirms that the person is a competent leader of Interactive IFS Groups. It does not confer any legal, professional, or licensing rights. It does not authorize the practice of psychotherapy, counseling, coaching, or any activity that requires a professional license under local, state, or national laws.
